Fees for a website

The cost to build a website

As a freelance web designer, my fees for building a website vary depending on what you want out of a new site and the time it takes to build. Perhaps you are just after a small “shop window” website to create a digital presence, where you want to run and update the site yourself. I might suggest a more cost-effective option, which, with the right expertise, you could do for yourself without the need to engage my services. However, if you are a complete beginner, and need a designer to set up an easy starter site for you to manage, I would charge a lot less than a full, all-singing, all-dancing website. A majority of my clients want a larger, more complex website, with all the benefits offered by a WordPress website. A premium theme and plugins, which would bring with it, all the associated costs of running a WordPress website. I charge a lot more because of the time it would take me to complete the site.

Below are the elements I take into consideration when quoting for a new or refreshed website. If you would like an idea of how much it would cost you for a new website, take some time to deliberate on what it is you would want.

Things to consider when asking for a quote

A website’s cost depends on the following factors:

– The size of a website

The more pages in a website the more time it will take to complete. I generally build a home page and one internal page for the client to view so that the rest of the site will follow the same design, once the client is completely happy. With more pages come more photos to edit, more search engine optimisation to apply and more layout choices depending on the page subject.

– The complexity of the website

The design of a website is a balance between style and content. I can add movement with gallery sliders, animation of images or text boxes so that they fade in or move in from the side. Perhaps you need the site to do something that the theme does not do by default, this will involve additional coding. This takes additional time to achieve.

– The amount of input I have into the content

Some clients can supply me, out of the box with all the text for every page, optimised to appeal to Google, with good meaningful titles, subtitles and content. A Google search by a visitor to a website is a question on a particular topic, your content must answer that question as fully and as meaningful as possible, with high-quality content that answers the who, why, what, when and where to that search question. Your content has to not only persuade the search engines that you are the right website to answer that search question, but you also then have to convince the visitor to your website that you are what they are looking for. This is one of the major ranking factors to consider when building the content of a website. Structuring the content takes time as well as understanding what you have to offer to a visitor.

– The number of images on the website

Every website needs a few images to bring it to life, but the amount will affect the fee I charge. Every image will be edited to the exact size required for its place on the website, then reduced in file size to ensure the speediest loading time for that page. I then save the image with a meaningful file name, upload it to the site and place it on the page with Alt text (a short-written description of an image for accessibility) and a description to aid search engine optimisation. A website where the main focus is lots of photos will take a huge amount of time.

Some clients are able to supply their own photos and employ a professional photographer, others have to depend on stock or royalty-free photos. I offer stock photos at a reduced rate for clients if they require them.

– The functionality of the website

I supply my premium theme as part of the contract with my clients, they get it free and I shoulder the annual cost, however, if they choose not to use my WordPress maintenance service, they will need to renew it after a year themselves. Some websites call for additional functions, not available from the theme, that is where plugins (like apps) come in. I would only suggest premium (paid for) or reputable plugins. Adding these and getting them to work as required also takes time and additional cost to the client. Included with all my website is a premium plugin for a contact form and other required forms, which, once submitted are sent to a required email address, again the renewal is free for those using my maintenance service.

– An e-commerce website

Setting up an online shop takes a lot of time, not only is there the main shop page, and each individual product and its photos, there is also the basket, checkout, cancellation and confirmation pages. In addition, a client needs to set up an online payment processing platform such as Stripe or PayPal, which is linked to the website before being thoroughly tested.

– An existing client

I offer a discount to existing clients who wish to move with the times and want a new look or a complete redesign. Where I can, I will reuse photos that have already been edited. Some of my clients are already on their 3rd generation website with me.

– Will you require basic update training?

To update a website’s text and images does take a certain level of technical know-how, if you are not comfortable with updating your site, I am happy to help on an as-needed basis. However, some clients would like access to their site but need some form of basic training once it goes live. I am happy to provide that and will factor that into my quote. The training will be basic, to alter the site and keep it fresh, I wouldn’t have the time to cover everything needed to change major structures and layouts!

– Do you need hosting and a domain?

Some clients already have a domain name and hosting, others wish me to set this up and manage the hosting for them. I do not offer my own hosting as I prefer my clients not to feel tethered to me once a website is completed. I am happy to suggest a hosting company and will match the choice with a client’s budget and the website size and complexity.

– Website platform

I design websites mainly in WordPress, this does come with ongoing costs and maintenance which may not suit every client’s budget. I will therefore suggest alternative options where a client, with a small amount of technical knowledge, can build a website themselves. If they need a little help with the setup or initial pages, my charges will be a lot less.

– The registering of a site with Google and Bing

Once a site is ready to go live, I set up Google and Bing accounts so that the website is registered and indexed by those search engines, I add analytics if required so that client has access to visitor numbers and other statistics. I will also set up and validate a client’s business location on Google My Business so that it appears on Google maps as well as Bing. Some clients already have this done so that it just requires a few additional tweaks.
